Library Wines

A library wine is wine that we have held back a small portion of a vintage to age in our Cellar. This allows us the opportunity to taste our wines as they mature: giving us insight into how the wine is aging in bottle, how our two estate vineyards are developing, and helps us advise our patrons on the ageability of the wines in their cellars.

Wines in the library are not currently available for sale, but may be released in the future to our wine club as individual bottles or vertical offerings.

2018 Pietro Pinot Noir

The 2018 Pietro is the very first Pinot Noir released from the Trovato Vineyard, our estate property in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. This Pinot Noir is a blend of nine different blocks of vines, representing as many different different clones – from the classic Pommard and Dijon clones, to newly selected cultivars such as Mt. Eden and Swan. After having been handpicked at optimum maturity, the clusters were destemmed and naturally fermented. The wine was subsequently aged in French barrels (25% new) for 10 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The diversity of Pinot Noir clones used creates a complex wine which is stylistically different from the Pinot Noirs produced on our estate Furioso Vineyard in Dundee.

94pts | James Suckling
“A very sultry nose with savory, flinty notes, as well as crushed violets and attractive blueberries, red berries, and cherries. Some cocoa powder, too. The palate has a very complete, mouth-filling style with such attractive, vibrant fruit flavors in the cherry and red-plum zone. Long, noble tannins. Drink or hold.”
Tasting Notes

Although less than ten miles apart, the Trovato terroir (an old marine sedimentary soil called Willakenzie) produces a more structured wine with predominantly cooking spice and dried herbs aromatics. As with all Furioso wines, this bottle was made to be cellared and will continue to evolve in the bottle for up to 10 years. To enjoy this wine young, it should be decanted before serving and would be a wonderful pairing for a New York hanger steak with Chanterelle mushrooms and a parsnip purée.

2018 Gina Pinot Noir

Meet the inaugural release of our Gina Pinot Noir. Named for proprietor Giorgio Furioso’s aunt, a close relative who, along with Giorgio’s mother, gave him a fond appreciation for food and family gatherings. This wine presents the elegant, delicate side of our second and newest estate vineyard. It was crafted with the utmost intention and care by using one hundred percent free-run juice and no new oak. We like to think this wine will truly honor Zia Gina in your cellar – strength and elegance paired with enviable longevity.

Tasting Notes

With aromas of violets and blackberries and intriguing notes of blood orange and tea leaves. The palate is silky, refined, and full of finely grained tannins that lead to a long, juicy finish. Gina would find a lovely pairing with a duck confit served over a simple lentil salad.

2017 L’Altra Pinot Noir

We consider the 2017 L’Altra as the true expression of our Dundee Hills estate Furioso Vineyard. Picked at the optimum balance of sugar and acid, the grapes from these old Pinot Noir vines were 100% destemmed and naturally fermented in small 2-ton stainless steel tanks. A judicious combination of pump-overs and punch-downs proved successful in gently extracting the delicate tannins and complex aromas from the grape skins. Free-run and press fractions were kept separate and the wine was then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. It was during that time in our cellar that the wine spontaneously underwent its secondary fermentation, contributing to its delicate texture.

Picked at the optimum balance of sugar and acid, the grapes from our 30+ year old Pinot Noir vines were 100% destemmed and naturally fermented in small 2-ton stainless steel tanks. A judicious combination of pump-overs and punch-downs proved successful in gently extracting the delicate tannins and complex aromas from the grape skins. Free-run and press fractions were kept separate and the wine was then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. The 2017 La Linea is an elegant expression of our Dundee estate, comprised of 100% free run juice and all Pommard clone Pinot Noir. Spontaneous secondary fermentation contributes to the wine’s delicate texture.

2017 Vincenzo Pinot Noir

Welcome to the first edition of our Vincenzo Pinot Noir! Named in honor of Giorgio’s Papa and Nono, both named Vincenzo, this wine celebrates their lives as winemakers and craftsmen, and their dedication to Famiglia. With more new oak in this cuvee, our Vincenzo represents a more structured, powerful style of Pinot Noir from our Dundee estate.

Tasting Notes

This first release of a new Pinot Noir line from our Dundee estate, the 2017 Vincenzo delivers aromas of plum, violet, and cinnamon spice which carry over to the palate. From there, it will open-up to more complex flavors of Bing cherry, herbal tea, and cedar. The wine is nicely structured, with a moderate acidity and a seamless integration. This wine will continue to improve with age, and we encourage cellaring for a couple more years for our Vincenzo to reach its full potential. We recommend decanting before serving if opened in its youth. This wine will find its perfect companion in the pairing of roasted duck in a peppercorn reduction.

2016 La Linea Pinot Noir

Every attention to detail has been given crafting our flagship wine, La Linea Pinot Noir. Using the best grapes from the best blocks in our estate vineyard, we carefully guided the fermentation process to extract the most delicate tannins and preserve the complex aromatics of the fruit. The wine was then aged for ten months in some of our most prestigious French barrels available before being bottled in September 2016.

“This young, fresh and delicious wine was neither fined nor filtered and was fermented with native yeasts. Barrel aging (30% new) has resulted in a toastiness that frames its spicy raspberry jam flavors. The texture, balance and finish are spot-on.” ~ Paul Gregutt
Tasting Notes

Our 2016 La Linea offers vibrant aromas of violet and blueberry with a hint a black pepper. In the mouth, this newly released wine shows great concentration and a broad palate, with firm tannins which will soften with aging. This rich and complex Pinot is meant to be enjoyed with food and would be the perfect pairing for duck confit or balsamic glazed salmon fillets.

2016 L’Altra Pinot Noir

An overall warmer Oregon vintage led to an early harvest of our Dundee estate Furioso Vineyard which started on August 31st. Unfavorable weather conditions at fruit set drastically lowered our crop for that year, with an average yield of 1.6 tons per acre (vice our usual 3 tons). Clusters were half their usual size and berries were small, leading to an amazing concentration and depth in the finished wine. Crafted to represent the darker, more powerful side of our Dundee estate, these conditions were ideal for making this years L’Altra.

Dominique Mahé, Winemaker:

Medium purple in color, aromatically the 2016 L’Altra is bursting with blueberry and blackberry fruit with a touch of earthiness and a hint of menthol. In the mouth, it is very structured, with powerful tannins and a refreshing acidity on the finish to complete this persuasive Pinot. Fire up your barbecues people, as our 2016 L’Altra demands to be paired with lamb shanks or even a juicy roast beef. This wine will cellar for over 10 years and we recommend decanting it if opened in its youth.

 2015 La Linea Pinot Noir

Every attention to detail has been given crafting our flagship wine, La Linea Pinot Noir. Using the best grapes from the best blocks in our estate vineyard, we carefully guided the fermentation process to extract the most delicate tannins and preserve the complex aromatics of the fruit. The wine was then aged for ten months in some of our most prestigious French barrels available before being bottled in September 2016.

92 pts | Wine Advocate“The 2015 Pinot Noir La Linea Furioso is pale to medium ruby-purple with savory/meaty notes of charcuterie and olives over boysenberry jam and dried autumn leaves. Light to medium-bodied, it features sweet red and blue fruits in the mouth with spicy accents of nutmeg and cardamom, fine-grained tannins and very juicy, mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and very spicy. Drink 2018 through 2026.”
91pts | Wine Enthusiast“This wine’s brambly raspberry fruit has a distinctive, sharp edge. It’s tightly framed with peppery tannins. Extended aeration reveals some barrel toast and warms up the finish. It was sourced from select barrels and should age nicely for up to a decade.”
Tasting Notes

Dominique Mahé, Winemaker:

Our 2015 La Linea has an inviting translucent ruby color. Complex aromatically, the wine offers a vibrant bouquet of blood orange, nutmeg, cranberry with some underlying notes of cinnamon and rose petal. Once in the mouth, all those are complemented by flavors of strawberry and licorice. Although still young, the wine has delicate tannins and the general structure shows a high level of refinement. This estate-grown wine, which delivers extreme finesse both on the nose and in the mouth, will continue to improve for the next 8 to 10 years.

 2015 L’Altra Pinot Noir

The 2015 L’Altra Pinot Noir is by design a bolder, more “masculine” expression of our Dundee Estate. The nose presents a remarkable combination of black and blue fruit overlaid with spice notes of white pepper and vanilla. A firmer style than La Linea, it offers more weight and sweet, juicy tannins on the palate. The long finish brings additional layers of cedar, sandalwood, and toast. This altra or “other” Estate wine has great aging potential and will benefit from being decanted.

2016 Kalita Vineyard Pinot Noir

We were very excited in 2016 to be able to put our hands on 4 tons of Pinot noir fruit (all Pommard clone) from the Kalita Vineyard in the Willamette Valley’s Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The vines were 16 years old at harvest and their roots were deep enough to express the specific terroir of that site and its classic marine sedimentary Willakenzie soil. As a bordering vineyard to the Kalita Vineyard, our Trovato estate vineyard shares lots of similarities with Kalita – soil, elevation, macro-climate, etc. and this was an amazing opportunity for us to get a sense of what our own vineyard would be able to give us when it would start bearing its own fruit. We definitely were not disappointed.

 2014 La Linea Pinot Noir

La Linea Furioso – The Furioso Line – is our premier, barrel-select label. Its elegant, refined, and aromatically complex nature creates a distinct and unique Pinot Noir.

The inaugural La Linea was produced using free run juice and aged 10 months in French oak. We used 65% old barrels, adding 35% new to give the wine extra structure. Our Head of Wine Jared Etzel repeatedly tested the wine, eventually selecting 6 barrels most representative of the cellar to carry our flagship label. The wine was bottled in September 2015.

While this is a wine you can enjoy now, the complexity of its character will continue to evolve in your cellar.

“Spice comes up in the nose and on the palate, punching up the fruit and bringing with it a nutty barrel-inflected base. Black cherry and blue plum cover the core fruit flavors, with a lovely sweet concentration dead center in the midpalate. This young wine is finely crafted and clearly built to age. Drink 2018 through 2028.” 93pts | Wine Enthusiast Magazine

 2017 Chardonnay

2017 is the last vintage we used non-estate fruit for our Chardonnay. That year, we sourced the grapes from the Robinson Vineyard, one of the most northern sites in the Willamette Valley AVA. The vines are over 20 years old and the clone is Dijon 95, a well-proven clone in the production of classic Oregon Chardonnays. This small lot has been fermented and aged in neutral French oak barrels. True to our nature, the wine is unfiltered (just very meticulously racked) and bottled using the lowest level of sulfur possible.

This wine will pair well with a simple onion tart or seared scallops with a coconut lemongrass sauce.

 2016 Terry Family  Vineyard Chardonnay

As Furioso Vineyards’ Chardonnay grapes were not yet ready for production, we sourced fruit from the Terry Family Vineyard and the Lazy River Vineyard.

The Terry Family Vineyard is approximately 4 miles northwest of Carlton, Oregon at an elevation of roughly 400 feet. The Lazy River Vineyard is northwest of Yamhill, Oregon on the slope of Mt. Richmond at an elevation of 370 feet.

The wine was aged in neutral French oak barrels for 20 months to enhance the broadness on the palate. Produced with Burgundy in mind, this wine reflects the lower alcohol, higher acidity style appreciated by both foodies and Francophiles.

Tasting Notes

This intense, multi-layered wine delivers aromas of honey suckle, jasmine, toasted almonds, and some hints of lemon zest. In the mouth, those are complemented by notes of white peach and a touch of flintiness on the finish. A careful aging for 20 months in French neutral barrels gives this Chardonnay an exceptional balance between fat and acidity. The wine is unctuous, yet lively. The complex, matured flavors, broad palate, silky structure and length of this wine are a reminder of a Meursault in a ripe vintage.
